Liquor board votes to revoke license of Club Xpressions

  • Xpressions is open — for now.
After listening to nine hours of testimony on Thursday, the Liquor Control Board of Review voted to revoke the license of Club Xpressions at 220 Admiral Boulevard. The license changed hands late last year, but new management was not sufficient for city officials, who fined and suspended the previous operator of a nightclub at the same location.

The revocation is not yet official, so the club can continue to operate. Gregory Vleisides, an attorney for the club's current owners, Eric and Natasha Union, said after the hearing that he would ask the Circuit Court for a restraining order and a review the liquor board's decision.

The Unions bought the club from Del Hedgepath, who owns the building at 220 Admiral. Hedgepath operated the clubs named NV and NRG that were notorious for bad behavior. Under pressure from the city, Hedgepath sold the club to the Unions, who are in their 20s and had no previous experience owning and operating a nightclub. (Eric Union told the liquor board that he had promoted shows prior to buying the club.)

Gary Majors, the manager of the city's Regulated Industries division, and a police sergeant spoke at the hearing about the disturbances associated with the club. The sergeant, Deborah Randol, said Xpressions often demands her attention on Friday and Saturday nights. "This club is one that we go to pretty much all the time," she said.

The Unions described the steps that they had taken to attract a more dignified crowd and to foster better behavior. Under cross examination, they acknowledged that most of the measures were taken after the city notified them that they had failed their probationary period.
