Football is back and other weekend possibilities

It’s not pretty to watch fans go through football withdrawal. Beer loses its taste. Chicken wings have no spice. And pretty soon, they’re trying to run a play with the family dog in the backyard. Well that all ends at 7 p.m. Friday, August 12, when the Kansas City Chiefs take the field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arrowhead Stadium. If you’re looking to celebrate the return of football with fellow addicts — um, fans — then there are plenty of options other than your couch. The pregame is at the Power & Light District as the outdoor Living Room space has $1 domestics and $2 craft beers from 4 to 7 p.m. Then grab a Saucy Chick ($9), a two-handed barbecue-chicken sandwich smothered in pepper-jack cheese, grilled onions and bacon from McFadden’s Sports Saloon (1330 Grand). If you definitely want a good view, the Sports Cave Bar & Grill (11440 W. 135th St., in Overland Park) has $3.25 Boulevard pints and more than 30 televisions. And if it’s lighter fried fare you want, the fried dill pickles at Harpo’s (4109 Pennsylvania) in Westport will be gone before the first timeout. The lockout is over, kids. We made it.

Friday is date night. And date night doesn’t have to be hard. Ruth's Chris Steak House (700 W. 47th St.) has a three-course meal and two glasses of wine or beer on Friday, August 12, at 5:30 p.m. Dinner includes the price of two movie tickets at the nearby Cinemark Theater on the Plaza. The dinner-and-a-movie special is $50 per person. An RSVP is required. Reserve your seats by calling 816-521-4800.

Crepes are about indulging yourself, whether it is your sweet tooth or your savory side. And now you can give in to temptation more often, because Chez Elle (1713 Summit), the creperie on the West Side, is now open until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

With great beer comes great happiness. Improve your happiness by going to the third annual Microbrew Festival on Saturday, August 13, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Zona Rosa. The beer festival is put on by the Kansas City chapter of UNICO National. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate.

Don't let summer go without one more corn dog or piece of fried dough. The Johnson County Fair is today and tomorrow at the Johnson County Fairgrounds (135 E. Washington, in Gardner). There's a pie-eating contest at 6 p.m. tonight and a goat-milking demonstration a half-hour later.
