It broke via Barr's Twitter yesterday evening that the Pig had received an e-mail from an offended patron, who threatened the bar and coffee shop with a lawsuit. In the e-mail — with which the Pitch was provided — the patron describes the painting (titled I was cleaning it, and it just went off) as "pornography," and "could even be considered sado-masochistic," suggesting that the show "should be taken down with an apology." The painting cited is the one above. Although, according to Barr, "It's been modified since that pic with extra squirts and little more definition to the pistol."
Specifically, the e-mail states:
"The exhibit "Heaven Party" promotes obscenity according to Kansas law, specifically B ii. All of the paintings include masturbation. Many show the ejaculation of semen, as in pornography. In particular, one painting shows a man ejaculating arithmetic signs and peace symbols with sperm, which is not even biological. Some of the paintings could even be considered sado-masochistic, especially the painting "WATCH THE VIRGIN JERK OFF ALONE UNTIL HE DIES", which shows a man whose penis has been transfigured into a gun, ejaculating onto his face, presumably in a fatal last act. There is no question that the paintings are disturbing, unsightly, and that they should incite thoughts from the darkest parts of our minds. I think they should be especially damaging to virgins in the city, who may have no other sexual outlet besides masturbation, especially considering dating standards which stipulate equal experience as a condition for sexual exchange. That plastic Jesus isn't much of a comfort to me, as a virgin."
