Everyone's looking for a bargain these days, which is why the dollar stores — the 21st century version of the "five and dime" chains of a much earlier era — have become a popular shopping destination in the current economy. But a new carry-out only venue in Kansas City, Kansas may be setting a new culinary trend. The tiny storefront at 1035 Minnesota at 1035 Minnesota Avenue is called Dollar Chinese.
The menu is extremely limited and not everything costs a buck: an order of eggrolls or crab rangoon can be had for a dollar. Ditto a dish of fried rice or noodles. But if you want chicken with that rice or those noodles, it's $2 extra. If you'd rather have shrimp, beef or pork, it's an extra three George Washingtons.
The dollar specials are served exclusively during the lunch shift, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. But even after 3 p.m., the food is still pretty cheap.
KCTV-TV Channel 5 reports that Jackson's attorney said she is filing an appeal and that Jackson still says he is innocent. Prosecutors used a combination of DNA evidence and witness testimony to convict Jackson. The Star reports, he has already spent more than 30 years in prison on unrelated sexual assault charges.
Jackson faces another trial for rapes in 2009 and 2010 in Waldo and Brookside, but a trial date hasn't been set.
The Alliance Defense Fund, a group that litigates on behalf of religious organizations, sued for two churches which argued that the fee is nothing more than a tax with a contrived name. So, really, they said, Mission was taxing the churches, which are tax-exempt under state law, for having people come worship. The Star reports that the city council has at last been swayed, and churches will be exempted from the fee is the ADF drops its suit. The paper said that First Baptist Church of Mission and St. Pius X would have to cough up $970.77 and $1,685.19 respectively.
Everybody else in Mission will still have to chip in to the road repair fund, which the city says will average $72 per house. The fee takes effect October 10.

The one I'm most giddy about is a bit more doom-worthy: Hammerlord’s double feature of Fiend Club: a tribute to the Misfits. The first performance is Friday, October, 28, on the Riot Room’s patio at midnight (21-plus). Appropriately foreboding, no? The second performance is Sunday, October 30, at the Replay Lounge. 21-plus. 10 p.m. Just in time for Halloween.
Here are some other shows that were recently announced:
