- Chef Matthew Poulton is bringing fish and chips to Lawrence.
This is the story of an Englishman who came to the plains to find the ocean. The Kansas City Star reported
last week that chef Matthew Poulton has signed a lease to take over the former Tenth Street Vegetarian Bistro space at 125 E. 10th St. in Lawrence. Poulton is planning to open Queen Lizzy's Fish and Chips in the coming weeks — a fish and chips shop that will offer proper British fare to the downtown crowd.
- Fancy some fish and chips?
Poulton was the chef at the Tenth Street Vegetarian Bistro, which closed last month. The veg-friendly restaurant had a fried (imitation) fish and sweet potato dish on the menu. It also served a traditional British dessert — banoffee pie, made with graham crackers, sliced bananas, honey whipped cream, and a drizzle of caramel syrup. Here's hoping those fries and dessert can migrate to the new place.
At Queen Lizzy's, the beer-battered fish and chips will be featured alongside kebabs and falafel wraps. The restaurant will also serve pickled eggs, onions and gherkins. Poulton is trying to raise additional startup funds for Queen Lizzy's on IndieGoGo, a micro-lending site. His $10,000 campaign there has 14 days and $6,500 to go. For opening and menu updates, you can follow the restaurant's progress on Facebook.
