It's not winter until you're wrapping your hands around a warm mug of hot chocolate. Back in 2009, we sought out some of the finest representatives from gas stations and grocery stores and restaurants across the metro. This week, we've decided to update the list with some new options and five cups of hot cocoa that are a mug above.

5. Aztec Hot Chocolate from Hi Hat (5012 State Line, in Westwood Hills) — The tiny coffeehouse in Westwood Hills (the recent site of a cash mob) makes a spicy, rich hot chocolate using bark from the Aztec dark chocolate sold next door at Annedore's Fine Chocolates. Call ahead; it's a winter special that's not always on the menu.

4. Drinking Chocolate from Christopher Elbow/Glace (1819 McGee) — It's melted dark chocolate and arguably the greatest eating challenge in the city. If you can get yourself to the bottom of the cup before falling asleep, you deserve a T-shirt.

3. Mexican Hot Chocolate from Homer's Coffee House (7126 West 80th Street, in downtown Overland Park) — This complex drink showcases why vanilla and cinnamon work so well with cocoa. Get it topped with a fat dollop of whipped cream and try to keep your nose clean.

2. Mexican Hot Cocoa from Mud Pie Vegan Bakery & Coffeehouse (1615 West 39th Street) — This is the kind of cup we can appreciate as an adult. It's a nuanced approach to chocolate rather than one, relentless sweet note.

1. Hot Chocolate from One More Cup (7408 Wornall) — As Yelpers discovered at a recent hot cocoa happy hour, One More Cup's combination of chocolate and Shatto milk is an uncomplicated hot chocolate throwback. It's just made with better ingredients than the powdered version your mom made on the stovetop.
