The intersection at 91st Street and Metcalf is about to become the center of the local health-food universe. The Kansas City Star reports that Natural Grocers, the organic grocery chain that came to Lawrence last year, will be opening in the former Borders at 9108 Metcalf on April 24.

Natural Grocers will be located in a neighboring shopping center to the Whole Foods Market at 7401 West 91st Street. While both stores focus on organic produce, vitamins, supplements, and grass-fed beef, Natural Grocers doesn't stock prepared foods and is known for catering to those with specialty diets such as vegan or gluten-free.

The store in Lawrence opened in a former Burger King location at 1301 W. 23rd St. on November 11 last year. It was the first Kansas store for the Colorado-based chain, with a Wichita store opening two weeks later.

Natural Grocers' stores also feature a health coach who can help with meal planning and shopping if you have dietary restrictions. The stores hold nutrition and cooking classes, as well. The chain has been successful building on the idea that health food can be affordable. Has anybody had the opportunity to shop at a Natural Grocers?
