Apparently there's also a a link between a preponderance of racially charged campaigning and rejection from voters. Stephens, who has no children in the Park Hill district, came in dead last in his April 3 election, according to the Star. Stephens pulled in just five percent of the vote. The district says he received 272 votes.
The results surely came as good news to Fred J. Sanchez, one of two winners in the race. He had said during the election that he thought it was important for voters to reject Stephens' ideas.
"I've experienced and lived the '60s, and I've raised my daughters not to use their surname and their sex to get ahead in life," Sanchez told Pitch contributor Matt Pearce. "I thought that was all behind me, but it's apparently not. ... I feel that what's even more important than I win or lose is whether or not the patrons and the voters say up or down to Mr. Stephens."
Preston pleaded guilty Thursday to having sexual contact with three students. KMBC-9 reports the gritty details: "[Preston] admitted Thursday in court to numerous encounters with three boys from the school, including sex with two of them. Investigators said DNA from a couch cushion in Preston's home proved she had sex with one of the victims. Prosecutors said she initiated the contact with all three boys."
The boys were 17 and 18 at the time of the contact. The age of consent in Kansas is 16.
She is scheduled to be sentenced on June 1. Prosecutors will seek probation for the new mom.
"Frequently, Collins would pass along information about Petro that he got from a co-conspirator, including that Petro had oil assets and added 30 to 40 gold mines. He would claim that Petro bought and sold oil, and that it had a packaging plant. While much of the time Collins simply repeated information to investors that he had heard from others, he knew that it was incomplete and potentially misleading," U.S. Attorney David M. Ketchmark said in a press release.
And apparently, it's not just KC. The Wall Street Journal explains that America's love affair with ranch dressing is about to get thicker - as Hidden Valley has released a "thicker, creamier" version of its signature product that the company is calling the "new ketchup" and that is designed to be used outside the salad bowl. I grew up on Cool Ranch, so I'll bite. What's the attraction to ranch dressing?
We recently caught up with Deheza and asked her how Bells' has maintained its strong icy sound, what sparked the storyline running through Ghostory, and how she discovered her ability to write.

The ballot referendum had been signed by more than 3,500 people, exceeding the minimum requirement to let voters decide on it. But the City Council suggested that the language was possibly unconstitutional, so the voters shouldn't consider it. In a press release, the Peace Planters said some members of the Council weren't convinced that the voters should have authority of the quasi-municipal Planned Industrial Expansion Authority, which issued bonds to pay for the Botts Road plant. (If you want to give yourself a migraine, read this February Pitch story about who actually owns the plant.)
Garcia's explanations of his dishes are passionate and alluring. I'd tasted the spicy beef concoction known as picadillo before but never heard it described with such wild abandon. The night I ordered it, Garcia delivered a poetic monologue, naming every sultry spice and piquant pepper. I wasn't sure whether I was expected to eat it or bathe in it.
