It was a record that stood for nearly five decades. A challenge that had never been beaten by the jaws of man. Then Randy Santel came to town. Seattlepi.com has the story of how the Kansas City eater (first introduced to Fat City readers last summer, when he was attempting to bring Man v. Food to town again) destroyed a 47-year-old, 72-ounce steak-dinner challenge at the Wedgwood Broiler in Seattle, Washington.

Santel walked into the steakhouse and forked over his $75 deposit. The staff brought the aforementioned steak, "a glass of tomato juice, cup of soup, dinner salad, steak fries or baked potato, slice of bread, a cup of coffee tea or milk, and a dish of ice cream or sherbet." He had an hour to eat it - 42 minutes later they returned his deposit.

Seattlepi.com goes on to report that Santel also tackled a 1-pound doughnut (just for fun, not for a record), a 6-pound bacon cheeseburger with grilled cheeses for buns, a 2-foot-long chili cheese dog, a 3-liter ramen bowl, a 3-pound, 12-patty cheeseburger and a 6-pound burrito (in seven minutes and 12 seconds).

The Seattle Weekly was at the Wedgwood to witness the challenge. The steak took an hour to trim, and Santel apparently downed an additional four glasses of lemonade that were not part of the required eats and drinks. As for Santel's strategy? Here's what he said to the weekly:

"I told them to give me a really sharp knife," he says. "And make sure you're on a sturdy table, or the water's going to go everywhere."
