The stricter curfew ordinance runs through Sunday, September 30, when it reverts back to the standard curfew of 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays for all minors under the age of 18. For each violation of the curfew, parents or guardians can be fined up to $500.
The last time the curfew was enacted in the entertainment districts (August 2011), there were zero violations the first weekend. What there was, and what there will be this weekend, is a beefed up presence from the Kansas City Police Department on the Plaza.
The City Council passed a truancy ordinance earlier this month that did not include a proposed daytime curfew pushed by Councilman Scott Wagner. School districts would inform the police of truant kids, and the police would then issue citations by mail. Each instance of truancy could come with a fine of $500, but the first offense would just be a warning.
Do you believe the curfew will have an impact or is it just window dressing?
