Whether it's what you top your barbecue with or the actual meat coming out of the smoker, it seems like no list is complete without a Kansas City-area entry. Three metro joints, Hillsdale Bank Bar-B-Q, Oklahoma Joe's and Papa Bob's Bar-B-Que, earned some national love recently for their sauces and oversized sandwich, respectively.

Some sauces are apparently so good that they can even transcend their region. Southern Living magazine dipped into "nearly 100 bottles" of barbecue sauce and, lo and behold, two Midwest staples found their way into the top 13 picks.

Oklahoma Joe's Night of the Living Bar-B-Q Sauce got the nod with the note, "for chipotle fans: fiery yet sweet. Hillsdale Bank Bar-B-Q's (Hillsdale, Kansas) hot version was pronounced "thick, sweet and smoky." The barbecue in a former bank building is one of the few area places to serve barbecue and wood-fired pizzas.

For sheer belly-destroying impact, it was the Ultimate Destroyer at Papa Bob's Bar-B-Que that Zagat tapped for its "8 Gut-Busting BBQ Dishes from Around the U.S." (the review site's food blog recognized the sandwich earlier in the year for its previous listicle, "10 Craziest Food Challenges"). As Zagat notes:

"No single human should try to undertake this alone, for it contains four and a half pounds of barbecued meat and six slices of bread stuffed into a 12-inch sandwich."

And that doesn't include the pound and a half of fries and four pickle spears (or jalapeno poppers) served alongside the sandwich.
