The Thai chicken wrap is the gateway sandwich at Longboards

  • The Thai Chicken wrap at Longboards.
Somewhere between the Zone and the Atkins diet, wraps got a bad name. They were dry, thin, flavored (the color indicated the "flavor," green was veggie, red was spicy, white was bland) and stuffed full of slimy turkey or alfalfa sprouts. It was a crime against sandwiches.

Thankfully, the wrap's good name is being restored on a daily basis at Longboards (6269 North Oak Trafficway). If you haven't been, it's time you make your way north of the river and discover why ordering a wrap no longer means settling for lunch.

The wraps come either cold (with lettuce tucked inside) or hot (with rice or a quesadilla-style flat wrap). The gateway wrap - the one you order if you're not into spicy dishes or just feeling your way through the menu - is the Thai chicken. It's made with chicken, veggies (sugar snap peas among them) and pepper jack cheese with a peanut sauce in a grilled chipotle wrap.

When you're ready to graduate or if you can handle a bit of spice, dig into one of the top sellers at Longboards: the cabo beef (beef, guacamole, salsa, pepper jack, rice and chipotle ranch on a chipotle wrap). Pepper jack is the cheese of choice at the sandwich shop, giving everything a creaminess and a few bites of heat. If you've been burned by wraps for too long, Longboards also has salad and noodle bowls. For a drink, skip the sodas and opt for the unsweetened Thai jasmine iced tea.

Just a note to help you avoid my embarrassment of attempting to place my order with the cashier - you order on the left-hand side of the restaurant, at the far end of a hanging menu board. The front counter is where you pay for your meal. Longboards is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
