One of the city's premier cocktailians is about to be turned loose on the Power & Light District. The Kansas City Business Journal reports that the Cordish Co. is collaborating with Ryan Maybee (of Manifesto and the Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange) on a new jazz club called The Kill Devil Club in the former Peachtree Restaurant space above Fran's in the Power & Light District. The space at the corner of 14th Street and Main has been vacant since December 2010 when the Peachtree closed. Cordish will own and operate the 5,400-square-foot club, while Maybee is busy developing a cocktail menu that revolves heavily around rum.

While the Business Journal notes that talks between Cordish and Maybee began in February, the crafter of cocktail menus has likely been thinking a lot longer about what to do with rum. Last October, Maybee won the North American Cocktail Challenge, which earned him a trip to Trinidad to compete in the 2012 Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge. One of his two signature cocktails was the Exploration Cocktail (Angostura 1919 rum, Clement Creole Shrub [orange liqueur], Broadbent Rainwater Madeira, and bitters).

As for the cocktail menu, Maybee anticipates having more than 40 kinds of rum behind the bar and from six to eight craft rum cocktails "with a tropical twist," alongside the same number of classic drinks. The Kill Devil Club is expected to open in late August.
