While the Business Journal notes that talks between Cordish and Maybee began in February, the crafter of cocktail menus has likely been thinking a lot longer about what to do with rum. Last October, Maybee won the North American Cocktail Challenge, which earned him a trip to Trinidad to compete in the 2012 Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge. One of his two signature cocktails was the Exploration Cocktail (Angostura 1919 rum, Clement Creole Shrub [orange liqueur], Broadbent Rainwater Madeira, and bitters).
As for the cocktail menu, Maybee anticipates having more than 40 kinds of rum behind the bar and from six to eight craft rum cocktails "with a tropical twist," alongside the same number of classic drinks. The Kill Devil Club is expected to open in late August.
