Karl Rove makes Todd Akin murder joke

  • Akin says the FBI is investigating threats against him.
Karl Rove just can't help publicly harassing Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin. A few days ago, he predicted that Akin would suffer a record-breaking defeat in November's election. Bloomberg Buisnessweek reports today that Rove made a wisecrack about Akin getting murdered. The report says that while Rove was speaking to heavy-hitting donors in Tampa at a breakfast, he said, "We should sink Todd Akin. If he’s found mysteriously murdered, don’t look for my whereabouts!"

The AP reports that Akin's campaign has released a statement (not available online yet) calling the joke disturbing because the FBI was investigating threats he received since his infamous "legitimate rape" comments. Rove's Crossroads GPS super PAC was one of the first major Republican campaign donors to abandon Akin over his comments. They previously spent $5 million in ads supporting his campaign. The PAC has been lobbying hard to get Akin to quit the race.

"Rep. Akin faces a simple choice: Will he help Democrats hold the McCaskill seat and potentially the Senate majority by staying in the race, or will he help Republicans defeat Barack Obama's most reliable ally in the Senate by getting out?" Crossroads president and CEO Steven Law said in a statement when the PAC dumped Akin.

The signs are up and Franks is almost open.
  • The signs are up, and Franks is almost open.
Restaurateur Dan Clothier has spent the past several weeks working to get a hood installed over the charcoal grill that he believes is the secret to Franks, the hot-dog shop that he has recently moved from the West Bottoms to 520 Southwest Boulevard.

"For a few hundred dollars, we could have had a gas charbroiler and saved all this grief," Clothier says. "But you have to sacrifice some things for perfection, and I think the charcoal taste is an important part of our brand."

The space that was last used as a Cricket Wireless store will open next week as Franks.

Well, isn’t this nice. The Dead Girls were featured on Daytrotter this week. The Lawrence power-pop band played a five-track set, which included “The Beast Inside,” “Never Erased,” “Girl in Fatigues," ”Naysayer,” and “Chasing Clouds.” And, hey. Isn’t that artwork a spot-on representation of the band?

George Engelbach isn't doing Missouri any favors at the RNC

Posted By on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 10:41 AM

If you're dressed like Abraham Lincoln, odds are that you're going to get a few microphones pointed in your direction. Former Missouri House Rep. George Engelbach, currently a Missouri delegate at the Republican National Convention, has been circling around news stations like a human version of "Where's Waldo" the past several days.

But it's what he said when Democracy Now began peppering him with questions about U.S. Rep. Todd Akin that makes him more than just a delegate with a unique sense of style.

Top of the Crown Grill, a Royals-themed bar and grill, is open at KCI

Top of the Crown to you.

  • Top of the Crown to you.
Kansas City International Airport and the Kansas City Royals have collaborated on Top of the Crown Grill, a new restaurant run by HMSHost Inc., in Terminal B near Gate 58. The vibe is upscale sports bar and grill with food that fits the motif. There are wings, pulled pork sliders, flatbread pizzas and hot dogs (as well as bratwursts and sausages). There are flat screens showing sports and highlights from the team's history, as well as Royals memorabilia and a royal-blue color scheme.

For culinary history buffs, Charles Ferruzza informed me that the restaurant in the Westin Crown Center (most recently Benton's Prime Steakhouse) was called the Top of the Crown from 1971 to 1984. This is the second new eatery to open after security in Terminal B — Pork & Pickle arrived in June.

Kansas City Irish Fest celebrates its 10th anniversary this year starting tonight. Irish Fest runs through Sunday. A single-day ticket costs $10 in advance or $15 at the gate, while a weekend pass is $25.

Marshall Roth is back in hotel dining ... in Wichita

Posted By on Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 2:46 PM

Chef Marshall Roth: He just keeps moving around.

A once-familiar face in Kansas City's culinary scene, chef Marshall Roth (who was the executive chef at the Hollywood Casino's Final Cut steakhouse before moving to Wichita last March) will be in Kansas City for a visit next month. Roth will be attending the September 13 grand opening of the new Ambassador Hotel at 1111 Grand. This week, Roth joined the Tulsa-based boutique hotel chain's family.

Roth, who has spent the last six months working as executive chef at the Hawker Beechcraft Global Delivery Center in Wichita, was hired to be executive chef for the new Ambassador Hotel in Wichita. Like the Kansas City property in the old Gate City Bank Building, the Wichita Ambassador Hotel — slated to open in December — is a boutique lodging venue in a historic downtown building (the former Henry's Men's Clothing Store at 420 East Douglas). Roth will oversee the kitchen at the uncompleted hotel's Siena Tuscan Steakhouse.
