Kansas City is finally getting serious about addressing the issue of puppy obesity. The Swope Park off-leash dog park, on the site of the former nursery, had its grand opening Saturday.

The second off-leash dog park in the city — the other has been open at Penn Valley Park for the past eight years — is set on five acres, divided by fencing into two areas for smaller and larger dogs. Pups under 30 pounds have an acre near Lakeside Nature Center (4701 East Gregory Boulevard), while big dogs have four full acres. The new dog park was built and will be maintained by Kansas City Parks and Recreation.
