- The maple bacon doughnut is a balanced breakfast, right?
(14383 Metcalf), a new concept from the creative couple behind Smallcakes, is now open in Overland Park. And to prove that this doughnut shop is not like the others in town, owners Jeff and Brandi Martin have teamed with BBQ Addicts to turn the Bacon Explosion (a weave of sausage and bacon) into the Bang Bang Bacon Surprise.
“We like the idea of outrageous but sophisticated flavors," Jeff Martin said in a release announcing the opening. “The Bacon Explosion is just that with its BBQ sausage, salty bacon and smooth smoky flavor.”
Twisted Doughnut is meant to be a departure from the classic cruller shop with employees in tie-dye shirts and plenty of non-standard doughnut options.

The Martins opened Smallcakes in Overland Park in 2010, adding cupcake shops within a year in Olathe and Lee's Summit. Jeff Martin had a famous appearance on Cupcake Wars
(he forgot the challenge ingredient, which he openly admitted during his elimination), which earned him an invitation for his honesty to The View
. An emerging national profile and the early success of the business caught the eye of Beautiful Brands International. The Martins signed a franchise deal with BBI in 2011. Smallcakes is now in nine states and Venezuela. The Twisted Doughnut concept already includes information on how to own your own franchise.
The doughnut menu at Twisted Doughnut is funky: caramel apple fritter, jelly bear (vanilla frosting and gummy bears), strawberries n' creme (raised doughnut filled with cream cheese, strawberries and powdered sugar), jelly and red velvet. There's also the standard glazed and long johns. Twisted Doughnut is open from 6 a.m. to midnight, Tuesday through Sunday.
