Celebrate the Chinese New Year and other weekend possibilities

Do you need an excuse to buy a cupcake?
If you've so far failed to keep your New Year's resolutions and you want a do-over, or you just want to keep your New Year's celebration going, Bo Lings on the Plaza (4701 Jefferson) is celebrating the Chinese New Year through Sunday, February 24, with a special dinner menu available for parties of six or larger.

The three-course meal is a mix of sweet, spicy and savory, including hot chili oil chicken with cold sesame noodles, sizzling beef tenderloin, tea smoked duck served with buns, Cantonese-style whole boneless flounder, and cupcakes and almond cookies. Dinner (which includes tea, soda or coffee) costs $35 per person, plus tax and gratuity.

You can still have romance after Thursday, February 14, and Frida's Contemporary Mexican Cuisine (7200 W. 121st St., Overland Park) provides proof. It's offering a $30, three-course prix fixe menu on Valentine's Day, as well as today and Saturday. Start with carrot and cinnamon soup, then enjoy pan-seared diver scallops on a tequila and Guanavana reduction with flash-fried carrots, green and yellow beans, papaya and jicama salad. For dessert, there's a duo of kahula and bitter dark-chocolate mousse and a creamy cheesecake with mango sorbet. A glass of sparking wine is included with dinner.

All other bake sales pale in comparison with the Broadmoor Baking Fridays, which return today, when students of the high-school culinary program produce an array of pies, tarts, cakes and breads. The culinary students will sell their baked goods, beginning at 2:30 p.m., at the Broadmoor Bistro (6701 W. 83rd St., Overland Park). They will also sell the Broadmoor Bistro's own blend of coffee, which costs $10 for a 12-oz. package. Sales of the coffee benefit the Broadmoor Technical Center's student-run SkillsUSA club. Broadmoor Baking Fridays are also slated for March 1, April 5 and April 19.

Breakfast may very well be the best meal of the day in Ireland. Find out why at Browne's Irish Market & Deli (3300 Pennsylvania), which offers a traditional Irish spread from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays and Sundays through March 17. Browne's has live music and a spread of eggs, potatoes, beans, rashers, bangers, toast and breads, tea, juice and coffee.

What have you got on tap for the weekend?
