Winter Restaurant Week and other weekend possibilities

Eat a lot, and you'll feel warmer. Winter Restaurant Week is back in the Power & Light District, through March 3, with lunch and dinner specials at 13 restaurants. There's a special $10 or $15 menu for lunch, and dinner ranges from $25 to $30.

The Bristol has a two-course lunch of lobster bisque and a flatiron steak salad; 801 Chophouse will serve you Caesar salad, Iowa Duroc pork chop and New York cheesecake for dinner. Lunch comes with a $5 gift card to use on your next visit to a restaurant, and dinner includes a $10 gift card.

You probably make perfectly fine pancakes, but occasionally breakfast needs to be taken up a notch. The brunch buffet at the Gaslight Grill (5020 W. 137th St., Leawood), from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays, fits the bill nicely with made-to-order Belgian waffles and omelets, carved prime rib, peel and eat shrimp, smoked salmon and eggs Benedict. Also served are applewood smoked bacon, penne pasta with tomato basil cream sauce, bagels and cream cheese, and Cajun chicken tenders. Those with a sweet tooth should opt for the cinnamon sticky buns, upside down cake, chocolate bread pudding with sautéed bananas foster, or fruit (you're being healthy) dipped in chocolate fondue. If you can't find something to eat here, you don't eat. The buffet costs $17.95 for adults and $7.95 for children 6 to 12 years old.

Great burgers come with great responsibility - the responsibility to eat them. Capital Grille (4740 Jefferson) has a new burger menu, and it may very well be your duty to go take a few bites. The offerings start with the familiar, a cheeseburger, and then move into the more exciting realms: a Wagyu burger, a lobster and crab burger, and a Mediterranean lamb burger. And when it comes to sides, make sure you ask for the other new addition to the Capital Grille menu: white-cheddar potato tots.

With mounds of snow everywhere, sometimes you just want a taste of something that reminds you of a warm spring day. The Wine Barn Winery & Vineyard (2850 N. 119th St., Kansas City, Kansas) releases the latest of its Bee's Knees Friday, March 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. The free release party pairs the semisweet wine with desserts. The Wine Barn describes the Bee's Knees as "light-bodied, crisp and full of citrus flavors and floral aromas." Exactly what one might need to forget about winter.

If you're feeling disconnected from what you eat or you want to understand more about how your food makes it to the plate, start with Eat This! KC Chews on the Politics of Food. The show, written and directed by Stephanie Roberts, seeks to understand all aspects of food production and is based on a series of interviews with chefs, eaters, reality show competitors, food processors and farmers. Tickets cost $15 for adults or $10 for seniors, students and UMKC staff. The show runs through Sunday, March 10.
