There may come a day in the not-too-distant future when we forget that Kansas was once bone-dry. Dark Horse Distillery, out of Lenexa (profiled last February as part of a piece on Kansas microdistilleries), has just released two new spirits: Reserve Bourbon Whiskey and Reunion Rye Whiskey.

"A lot of people like drinking it neat or on the rocks," Dark Horse Director of Sales and Marketing Damian Garcia says. "It opens up some of the flavors, but they both do really nicely in a cocktail."

Dark Horse began aging the rye and bourbon in barrels in June 2011. The Reserve Bourbon, made with corn and rye, and Reunion Rye, made only with rye, both clock in at 89 proof.

"We think the rye whiskey is pretty unique," Garcia said. "Most rye whiskeys on the market have a secondary or third grain."

The Reserve Bourbon has vanilla, maple, caramel and smoke notes, while the Reunion Rye has a "smooth and creamy character with a spicy finish." Each bottle is hand-numbered by head distiller Patrick Garcia with the batch and bottle number. The new spirits, the first produced in Lenexa, join the distillery's two existing products on the market. Rider Vodka and Longshot White Whiskey were released last year.

Dark Horse Distillery representatives will be at Bootleg Liquor (7412 W. 121st St., Overland Park) sampling all four spirits from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, and at MDL Wine & Spirits (8850 W. 95th St., Overland Park) from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23. You can find a list of local retailers carrying the new Dark Horse products here.
