The beans were ground. The grounds were packed. And steam rose like a locomotive. And when it was all said and done, Parisi Coffee's Pete Licata had been declared one of the 12 best baristas in the world.

He'll have a chance tomorrow to prove that he's the best when the 2013 World Barista Championship resumes in Melbourne, Australia (Barista Magazine has been blogging about what it's like to be there). After a strong showing in round one, which included 53 competitors last night, the United States' representative advanced to the semifinals.

Licata punched his ticket to Australia by winning the Specialty Coffee Association of America's 2013 United States Barista Championship in April. The barista championships measure skill in drink preparation, service and presentation. Contestants are judged on the cleanliness of their station, technical skills and the taste of their drinks. Licata will pull his next shot at 5:45 p.m. tomorrow. You can watch the livestream of him competing here.
