New releases from locals Hidden Pictures, the Jinxed

The Jinxed.

A couple recent, smallish, local online releases we thought we'd bring to your attention.

Following the departure, last year, of singer-glockenspieler Michelle Gaume Sanders, Hidden Pictures is sounding more and more like a straight rock outfit than a cutesy folk-pop group. Last week, the revamped group released a three-song EP called Sister Wife, which you can hear here or here. (I'm particularly digging "Pre Madonna.") Says bandleader Richard Gintowt: "These are the first songs that we're releasing from a batch of tunes that I recorded with singer Claire Adams (Claire and the Crowded Stage), drummer Lennon Bone (Ha Ha Tonka), bassist Kyle Akers (Antennas Up), guitarist Jeff Freling (Victor & Penny), and keyboardist Nate Holt (Revelation: A Tribute to Journey)."

Speaking of Bone: He does some trumpet work on the Jinxed'sThe Loon, a digital 7" from the local label he runs, Sharp County Records. The Jinxed is a collaboration between Jon Ulasein and Bo McCall (both of Antennas Up) and Bobby Topaz (of Bad Wheels), and the recording draws from '70s pop influences. "The Loon" has some Elton John piano bounce and transitions into yacht-rock tones; "Say to Me" is soft, breezy and melodic - think Carole King or Fleetwood Mac. It's some damn-tight songwriting, and I recommend that you give it a spin. Do that here.
