Actor and playwright David Wayne Reed spent Father's Day at Worlds of Fun. While he was at the amusement park, he bought a hot dog, a soda and a funnel cake with strawberries. The total purchase should have cost him less than $20.
The actual charge? Way more than that.
Several days later, Reed - who is featured in a new documentary film, Outwrites, opening tomorrow night at Tivoli Cinemas - discovered that he had been charged $1,476.46 for the three items.
"I was charged 39 times for the corn dog and soda," Reed says, "and 38 times for the funnel cake. Plus overdraft charges. Worlds of Fun was very nice about it. I think they were relieved I wasn't calling up screaming. They promised to set everything straight and offered me four passes."
Reed was not the only patron of the park who was burdened with overcharges. WDAF Channel 4 has reported that a number of Worlds of Fun patrons were hit with similarly big charges on the same day. Worst. Father's Day promotion. Ever.
