You haven't seen balloons until you've been to the Great Midwest Balloon Fest. The annual celebration of hot-air balloons goes from today though Sunday at the Great Mall of the Great Plains (20700 W. 151st St., in Olathe). In addition to hot-air balloons - rides are available - there are doughnut-eating and pie-eating contests and plenty of eats (Cajun, funnel cakes and hot dogs). Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12 years old.
The city's food trucks are banding together to help Michael Bradbury, the owner of the Funnel Cake Truck, and his family after they lost their Olathe home in a recent fire. The Food Truck Benefit for the Bradburys has been set for Sunday, August 11, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Merriam Marketplace (5740 Merriam Drive). The truck list currently includes Brock Hops, Chef Baldee's Pizza, Crave, Indios Carbonsitos, Monk's Roast Beef, Prairie Fire Oven, Smokin' Fresh BBQ, and Wilma's. All of the proceeds will benefit the Bradbury family.
Enjoy the beers of the world at the fifth annual Microbrew Festival, from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday. UNICO Kansas City organizes the yearly beer event at Zona Rosa (8640 N. Dixson Ave.). Tickets cost $30 at the gate ($25 in advance) and include 4-ounce beer samples and a commemorative glass.
Tavern in the Village (3901 Prairie Lane, Prairie Village) and Tavern at Mission Farms (10681 Mission, Leawood) have new happy-hour items - bruschetta, cheeseburger sliders, chicken nachos, chicken satay, and lentil cakes - for $6. Happy hour goes from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 8:30 p.m. to close. Both restaurants also have added a Saturday brunch. Brunch is now offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
