  • George Saunders will be at Unity Temple on the Plaza tonight.
The writer George Saunders is more or less universally beloved by the literary establishment and pretty much every aspiring literary writer in America. Saunders' brilliant, tender, beautiful short stories - in CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, Pastoralia and, most recently, Tenth of December - have earned him, in 2006, a MacArthur "genius grant" and, last year, the cover of the New York Times Magazine. The man is unassailable, an American treasure. We broke down and cried, reading his essay "Chicago Christmas, 1984" last month - the good kind of cry.

Tonight at 7 p.m., Saunders discusses Tenth of December and answers audience questions at Unity Temple on the Plaza. It's a Rainy Day Books event, which means attendance requires purchase of a Tenth of December paperback. All the relevant details can be found here.
