Genessee Royale will start Sunday brunch in September

Todd Schulte's four-year-old Genessee Royale Bistro will begin serving Sunday brunch on September 14; the hours will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. - ANGELA C. BOND

  • Todd Schulte's four-year-old Genessee Royale Bistro will begin serving Sunday brunch on September 14; the hours will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

A month after Voltaire began serving Sunday brunch in the West Bottoms,  restaurateur Todd Schulte at the nearby Genessee Royale, 1531 Genessee, has announced that he'll also begin serving Sunday brunch starting Sunday, September 14. Schulte says he'll also stop offering Monday lunch in the bistro, beginning September 15; breakfast and lunch will continue at Genessee Royal Tuesday through Saturday.

"During the years that I was still operating Happy Gillis," Schulte says, "we had such a solid brunch business there that I didn't want to be shuttling between the two restaurants on a Sunday. But my wife, Tracy, and I frequently stop by Genessee Royale on Sundays, even though it's been closed on that day, to water the plants and herbs and maybe fix lunch for ourselves. It seemed the timing was right to start Sunday brunch."

Ça Va introduced Sunday brunch yesterday

  • A stacked brioche French toast, liberally garnished with fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, is one of the featured brunch items at Westport's intimate champagne bar, Ça Va.

The six-month-old Ça Va bistro at 4149 Pennsylvania hosted a soft opening for its new Sunday brunch on August 3, but "officially" introduced the brunch menu, created by chef and co-owner Howard Hanna, yesterday.

The stylish menu reflects the distinctly Gallic style of the intimate champagne bar with its marble-topped cafe tables and potent French-press coffee (roasted for the venue by the Broadway Café — there's no espresso machine yet). I needed a strong jolt of java when I stumbled into the boîte yesterday and maybe a little French music, too (Piaf, Aznavour, Serge Gainsbourg), instead of the subtle jazzy soundtrack that co-owners Hilary and Justin Norcross prefer (including a soulful "Piece of My Heart," performed by Aretha Franklin's sister, Erma Franklin) on a Sunday morning.

Voltaire begins brunch this Sunday

You don't have to attend a church service before driving to Kansas City's West Bottoms for Sunday brunch. In fact, Voltaire, the night-only restaurant and saloon at 1617 Genessee, which kicks off its first Sunday brunch this Sunday, August 10, may be the only restaurant in town where pre-brunch religious worship is not a proper homage to its namesake; the actual "Voltaire" — French philosopher François-Marie Arouet (1694-1774) — was on record for claiming to make only one prayer in his life.

"I have never made but one prayer to God," Voltaire wrote. "A very short one: 'O Lord make my enemies ridiculous.'  And God granted it."

It's certainly one prayer to contemplate this Sunday — there are reservations still available — from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., when Voltaire's chef and co-owner, Wes Gartner, and his partner, Jill Myers, try out brunch service at the 15-month-old restaurant.

Uberdine to serve its first brunch on May 25

Chef Joe Shirley isn't ready for his real restaurant yet - he and his wife, Carolina, want to wait until their only child, a sixth-grader, goes to high school - but his nine-month-old pop-up dining concept, Uberdine (which The Pitch named "Best Restaurant Experiment" in last year's Best of Kansas City issue), is giving the young chef the opportunity to keep his day job as the executive chef for a major financial institution and express his culinary creativity on his own terms.

Since launching Uberdine last July, Shirley has mounted four very different dinners in unique locations, including a coffee-inspired meal at the Roasterie and a Japanese-style meal at the Filling Station coffeehouse in midtown. Uberdine's first brunch is to be held Sunday, May 25, at the Farm to Market Bread Co.'s headquarters at 20th Street and Walnut. Tickets are still left for the brunch, which has two seatings (at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; for prices and reservations, visit the Uberdine website here).

The eight-course brunch will, like the previous four Uberdine events, be a showcase for Shirley's creativity: one of the courses is described on Shirley's menu for the event as "Mac and Cheese": truffle, cheddar, explosion.

The Boot now serving brunch, Italian-style

An Italian-style doughnut, frittelle di mele, and a cup of espresso is the way to begin brunch at The Boot.
  • An Italian-style doughnut, frittelle di mele, with a cup of espresso is the way to begin brunch at the Boot.

The best way to start brunch at the Boot, the cozy Italian restaurant in Westport created by Aaron Confessori and Rich Wiles, is with an order of frittelle di mele, the airy but yeast-free (who knew?) fried apple fritters, each glazed with a spoonful of a sugar-and-orange-juice icing. I could eat a plate of them by myself. In fact, I did last Sunday, dining after church with my friend Martha who refused to sample even one of the warm pastries.

"I'm on a diet," she said.

Well, I am, too, but it's a diet of my own creation that luckily includes apple fritters, lemon ricotta pancakes, brioche French toast and scrambled eggs - all of which are served at this restaurant's one-month-old brunch, served both Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lidia's Brunch Theatre needs a tastier show

At Lidia's Brunch Theatre, the pasta is more theatrical than the show.
  • At Lidia's Brunch Theatre, the pasta is more theatrical than the show.

A creative collaboration between Lidia's Kansas City and the Living Room theater troupe, Brunch Theatre, kicked off last Saturday and Sunday with a show that the director, Alex Espy, calls an "environmental experience." It's a comedy about a restaurant that's set in a restaurant featuring a waiter who isn't really a waiter. It's really a play that isn't really a play in any traditional sense, but a very raucous and very physical cartoon.

I liked the brunch a great deal, the show not so much. But I'm thinking that I'm not the right demographic for a folly like The Accidental Waiter. The Lidia's brunch on Saturdays and Sundays is designed for a relatively sophisticated and adult palate. The play, however, is for children.

Nicholas Grunauer says that his father, chef Peter Grunauer, was ready to start serving a Sunday brunch soon after the Viennese restaurant opened in the Crossroads last year.

"But we needed to get a Sunday liquor license first," Nicholas says. "Once we had that, we had the menu ready and just needed to finalize our plans."

Alternatives to Valentine's Day: Lunch on Saturday or romantic Sunday brunch

Posted By on Mon, Feb 7, 2011 at 3:04 PM

Forget champagne and toast romance with this kick-ass juice medley from Succotash.
  • Forget champagne and toast romance with this kick-ass juice medley from Succotash.

The downside of the Valentine's Day holiday falling on a Monday evening is that after a night of dining and drinking champagne -- and whatever else follows that behavior -- you'll have to stumble into work the following day, maybe a little worse for wear.

Another potential negative is that Valentine's is, traditionally, the night that everyone goes out to eat, including folks who may not go to a restaurant the other 364 nights of the year. It can be a very busy night.

Hamburger Mary's is moving, but that didn't stop Sunday's drag brunch

Jessica Dressler's "Dirty Dorothy" won't permit f-bombs if there are kids in the dining room.
  • Jessica Dressler's "Dirty Dorothy" won't permit f-bombs if there are kids in the dining room.

If Dr. Eric Christensen, the managing partner of the one-year-old Hamburger Mary's restaurant, was concerned about the report in last week's Kansas City Star about his restaurant possibly having to move out of the big purple building at 101 Southwest Boulevard, he didn't seem remotely flustered yesterday.

Christensen was on hand to handle musical duties for the restaurant's fifth weekly "Sunday Drag Brunch" hosted by local performer -- and real live girl -- Jessica "Dirty Dorothy" Dressler.
