This year, the Folk Alliance International introduces its Music Fair into the Sheraton Hotel next to the Westin in downtown Kansas City. Though the Music Fair takes place over the same period as the FAI Conference - Thursday, February 19, to Sunday, February 22 - it is designed as an entirely separate event. The Fair is meant to cater to the public - those among us who are not musicians but would like to take part in some of the immense talent that the FAI brings to town.

It's never too early to start planning for next year's Folk Alliance International Conference & Camp. The FAI has just announced the keynote speaker for the huge annual folk blowout: Rita Coolidge, the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter ("We're All Alone," anyone?) and one of VH1's original VJs.

The memories of February's successful 26th Annual Folk Alliance International Conference - held for the first time in Kansas City - are still fresh in our minds, along with the wise influence of the FAI executive director (and SXSW co-founder) Louis Meyers. We knew that Meyers, who has been heading up the FAI since 2005, would be retiring at the end of this season. The only mystery was who would be replacing him.

Even as the Westin's conference ballroom filled to capacity for Al Gore's climate-change presentation, it was not immediately obvious why he was presenting a scientific-leaning climate presentation at a music conference.

Walking into the Westin lobby for the Folk Alliance International Conference is almost overwhelming. You're basically slapped in the face with a wall of noise. Music and voices hit you the instant you walk in, and it never ceases. In addition to the numerous showcase rooms, bands play in stairwells, hallways, next to fountains - if there's open space, there is a musician there, and they are singing or playing.

Night two of the International Folk Alliance triggered all sorts of folk sentiments

It was just before 6 p.m., and the first musical acts of the night were starting. I was assuming I'd face a horde of folkers, but was slightly disappointed that the early-evening special was so limited in attendees. The halls of the Westin Crown Center were bare; perhaps too much partying in the upstairs rooms took place the night before (and morning of, for that matter).

Like a great deal of the hometown acts playing the opening-night showcase at the Folk Alliance Conference last night, I was new to the whole FAI experience. And even though The Pitch has coordinated weeks of coverage leading up to this event, I still found myself wholly unprepared for the experience.

From the moment I arrived at the 26th Annual Folk Alliance Conference at Westin Crown Center, I was a little overwhelmed. Musicians from around the world swarmed the lobby and peppered the hallways, instantly doubling the zip code's quota for artfully shaggy hair and fedoras. Young and old alike, these guitar-slinging nomads were nonchalantly beautiful. I wanted to stare at all of them.

As part of our International Folk Alliance Conference preview series, we're rounding up a bunch of notable acts that are coming to town and chatting about what's happening in their world. The International Folk Alliance Conference takes place from February 19-23. Details
here.

Pennsylvania folk trio the Stray Birds is a band that pulls you in with gorgeous three-part harmonies and keeps you for life with deft fretwork. While the band has been together since 2010, it's only within the past year that the Stray Birds have seen national acclaim. Maya de Vitry is the band's banjo player and chanteuse-in-residence, and she took time out of the Stray Birds' recent trip to Dublin to answer a few questions for The Pitch.
