  • Xpressions has to close on Oct. 24.
Xpressions, the troubled downtown nightspot, is running out of time and legal maneuvers.

After forcing an ownership change last year, City of Kansas City, Missouri, liquor inspectors have been trying to shut down the nightclub at 220 Admiral Boulevard. In March, after a drive-by shooting that city officials said originated from a dispute at the club, the city's Regulated Industries Division notified the owners, Eric and Natasha Union, that Xpressions had flunked its probationary period. The Unions bought the business last December from Del Hedgepath, who operated clubs in the space that were notorious for shootings, fights and other mayhem that frequently spilled into the streets.

Liquor board votes to revoke license of Club Xpressions

Xpressions is open -- for now.
  • Xpressions is open — for now.
After listening to nine hours of testimony on Thursday, the Liquor Control Board of Review voted to revoke the license of Club Xpressions at 220 Admiral Boulevard. The license changed hands late last year, but new management was not sufficient for city officials, who fined and suspended the previous operator of a nightclub at the same location.

The revocation is not yet official, so the club can continue to operate. Gregory Vleisides, an attorney for the club's current owners, Eric and Natasha Union, said after the hearing that he would ask the Circuit Court for a restraining order and a review the liquor board's decision.

  • Club Xpressions has a friend on the City Council.

Councilman Jermaine Reed has notified the city's Regulated Industries Division that he's keeping tabs on its handing of a downtown nightspot with a troubled history. In a May 27 letter to the city's Regulated Industries Division, Reed volunteered to "help clear up any issues that could hinder the future success" of Club Xpressions at 220 Admiral Boulevard.

Gary Majors, the manager of the city's Regulated Industries Division, has taken steps to revoke the liquor license of Club Xpressions. Notorious for mayhem under a previous owner, the venue has continued to appear in the police blotter. A 19-year-old was shot and killed after leaving the club in March.

  • Don't worry, we'll clean up the last editor's cubicle.

Did you know the song numbers in the Dave's Stagecoach jukebox (R.I.P.) by heart? Can you explain the allure of Kona Grill as vigorously and accurately as you can the Riot Room? Can you drink on someone else's dime but not get so hammered that you leave your notebook on the back of the toilet?

If yes, we may have a job for you. Or you may have a drinking problem. Read on to find out which!

Nowhere for Santa's Little Helper to run.
  • Nowhere for Santa's Little Helper to run.

The Woodlands racetrack in Kansas City, Kansas, once home to off-track betting and to live horse, greyhound and wiener dog racing, has been closed since 2008. Now Phil Ruffin, a wealthy businessman from Wichita, has acquired the option to buy the track.

Still, the crux of the deal is held up by the same issue that caused the track's current owner, Howard Grace, to shut it down: Kansas laws that prohibit the installation of slot machines at racetracks.

Kansas newspaper headline amuses smug New York blogger

Hooker is on the left. Beaver is on the right.
  • Hooker is on the left. Beaver is on the right.

Hey, look! Some ink-stained wretch at Kansas' Leader & Times inadvertently made a funny! And someone in New York saw it!

The headline: "Hooker overcomes illness, slaps Beaver." And, yeah, the article was about a high school basketball game.

This is how we residents of flyover states confirm our existence. Ahhh.

Forgive us for this brief dunk into Entertainment Tonight territory, but according to blog Celebitchy.com, Kirstie Alley hauled her saddlebags to Wichita, Kansas, for a new weight-loss regimen. Which is sort of like going to Las Vegas to get sober, but to each her own.

According to a KWCH12 Eyewitness News story, Alley's sister teaches Zumba in Wichita and suggested that her famously fat sibling give it a try. Considering how a new fitness trend drops weekly (Weight Training With Your Toy Breed!), it's weird that Alley had to come to the dead center of the United States to try Jazzercise 2.0.

  • "Bite them, officer? Yeah, I did it. And I hope they burn in hell!"

Jacob Bradley, 19, and Justin Santhuff, 17, have each been charged with a count of stealing for smuggling a $5,000 meerkat out of the Kansas City Zoo. The probable cause statement issued by the Jackson County Prosecutor's office should be performed as a live reading by Nathan Lane.

According to court documents, zoo workers noticed that their open-air exhibit was one meerkat short on November 4. They didn't know whether it had been taken by "a person or a predator," which is why they did not file a missing-meerkat report.
