Lawrence record label Whatever Forever has a new tape compilation on its way this weekend, so what better way to celebrate than with a festival? Amongst the many local musicians featured on the upcoming comp and as part of the festivities is the one and only Danny Pound.

Given his many wonderful projects over the years, it was difficult to decide which one to feature, but we went with one of the earliest: Vitreous Humor. Their Posthumous CD, from 1998, features a selection of 7-inch tracks, live material, and new songs, including the very-excellent "Sharin' Stone." It's a college-rock gem of the first order.

Throwback Thursday: Listen to Appleseed Cast's 'Mare Vitalis' ahead of their Sunday Riot Room show

Appleseed Cast's current lineup may have only frontman Chris Crisci remaining from the days of Mare Vitalis, but that doesn't mean that Crisci and his crackerjack group of young bucks can't delve deeply and find the reserves necessary to play the album in its entirety.

The album, released by Deep Elm in 2000, is one of those albums that's just so gorgeous and perfect in every way. It's big and ringing. Most importantly, it's full of things that remind us acutely of what it feels to be young and confused and painfully aware of one's own awkwardness — and that finding solace in music such as this was a way out for most of us.

Throwback Thursday: Listen to Smoke's rare '70s disco funk, unearthed at 7th Heaven's Vinyl Underground

The dangerous part of following the Vinyl Underground at 7th Heaven's Facebook page is the near-constant barrage of vinyl treasures threatening to drain your wallet. The upside is the simultaenously near-constant stream of intriguing local releases. The shop's really good at cluing customers into vintage local stuff, and last week, this gem popped up.

Drink This Now: Summer Pimm's Cup and Rajasthani Royale at Bluestem

At Bluestem, Andrew Olsen makes Summer Pimm's Cup and Rajasthani Royale.

This week's Drink This Now is a twofer: After chatting with Andrew Olsen last week about his new position as the bar manager at Bluestem, I knew I needed to go sample one of the Pimm's Cups he mentioned. (Well worth it. More on that after the jump.)

But Olsen, back behind the bar after a four-month dry spell as the assistant manager at Cleaver & Cork — work that took him "away from his craft," as he put its — Olsen was eager to experiment, and having just one of his cocktails seemed like gross negligence on my part.

If you're sticking around town this weekend (as opposed to, say, diving into a lake somewhere), you won't be lacking any opportunities for entertainment. Forget fireworks - America will only turn 239 years old once, and you should boogie in her honor.

Throwback Thursday: Go back to the future with this live clip from the Primetime Heroes

Topeka pop-punk foursome the Primetime Heroes were supposed to play last weekend's Field Day Fest, but were quietly replaced without an explanation. Given that these guys were once one of the area's biggest bands, it's kind of a bummer to see that they couldn't get together for their first Lawrence show in almost a decade. The quartet has played several reunion shows as of late, but they've been mostly in Topeka.

What's the point of this video, then? Well, this partial set —  from their last Lawrence show in July of 2005 — begins with a performance of Huey Lewis and the News' "Power of Love," and tomorrow, July 3, is the thirtieth anniversary of Back to the Future. And that's something worth celebrating, dammit.

In anticipation of what will surely be an epic, do-not-miss show at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, June 27, when the Rolling Stones stop through town on their Zip Code tour, let us consider a citywide game of "Where's Waldo" — the Waldo being, in this case, the suddenly very Instagram-y Mick Jagger.

Throwback Thursday: Watch Federation of Horsepower's video for 'Hot Rails' ahead of their Saturday show at the Replay

It's a testament to Federation of Horsepower's stamina (and rotating crew of musicians) that one finds it surprising that their tenth anniversary show was nearly three years ago. For a band that's been gigging hard around the area for as long as this former quartet — now quintet — has been, they approach every show like it was their first.

There's something very appealing in a band that's willing to hew to the old adage that every show is somebody's first time seeing you. This diesel-fueled rock 'n' roll machine put out their first album, Stay Down, back in 2007. While there's quite a few live videos of the FoHP out there on YouTube, this is the only official music video they ever did, for "Hot Rails."

Throwback Thursday: Watch Onward Crispin Glover's video for for 'No Need For Checkpoints'

Posted By on Thu, Jun 18, 2015 at 3:28 PM

Onward Crispin Glover's 2001 record, The Further and the Faster, is the perfect amalgamation of energetic debut release and punchy veteran talent. Before forming this band, frontman Byron Huhmann had been in Kansas City's beloved power-pop rockers TV Fifty, and guitarist Marty Robertson and drummer Billy Johnson had both done time in Frogpond.

Still, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts, and it's a crying shame that this Anodyne Records album was the only release the band would make. It's a swirl of beautiful distortion and it's still got hooks for days. Ostensible single "No Need For Checkpoints" — in that they made a video for it — is an excellent example of what the quartet did best.
