Middle Twin with Forrester, the Phantastics and Narkalark
The Bottleneck, Lawrence
Thursday, March 27

Lawrence's Middle Twin has an excellent sense of how dance pop works: You work the low end, keep things catchy, make the synth lines sing, and work that fog machine like crazy. Above all, if you're headlining, keep things going. When your fans have been knocking back $1.50 PBRs since doors opened four hours ago, they're going to want shit they can dance to. Slowed-down ballads will be applauded politely, even if they're the title track to your new EP.

A lot of ear-appeasing things are coming out of Lawrence, and one of the newest and most noteworthy is the electro-pop five-piece Middle Twin. Not so long ago, the band had a slightly different lineup and performed under the name Brain Food. Now, with bassist Jon Fitzgerald and a new drummer Isaac Flynn - who have been with the band since August - Middle Twin is debuting a new sound on its EP City of Gold.

Jimmy Tebeau's southern Missouri property, Camp Zoe - home to several Schwagstock festivals a few years ago - was raided and seized by federal agents back in 2010. Prosecutors alleged that Schwagstock essentially doubled as an open-air drug market, and that drug dealers sold somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000 worth of product during the festivals. (The property was sold to the state and is now considered a state park.)

The frontman of Grateful Dead tribute act the Schwag, Tebeau was later sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for maintaining the drug-involved premises.

On its debut record, Manhattan, Skaters - from, you guessed it, Manhattan - doesn't really push the envelope too much. The group writes songs about what they know: living in New York City, being young, partying and making romantic connections that are less about emotional attachment and more about who looks the best when you're wearing beer goggles.

Lorde with Lo-Fang
The Midland, Kansas City
Friday, March 21

The artist spent a few moments explaining the inspiration for the song: After an epic house party she'd thrown with her sister and her best friend, while all her friends were crashing on the floor and in random corners, Lorde stayed awake.
