Pat Hopewell's first UFO Show is tonight at Davey's, with Locrian

Posted By on Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 12:37 PM

locrian.jpg
One spin through last year's double album The Clearing/The Final Epoch, by Chicago drone duo Locrian, puts you in a dark place. It's full of proper apocalyptic noise driven by doom and disaster - breathtaking black-metal-influenced tunes with the power to raise evil spirits and drop testicles. This bill, which also includes metal locals Boreas and Jason Zeh, is the first UFO Show, a new series at Davey's curated by local experimental music sage Pat Hopewell. "Booking shows that other venues are too chickenshit to attempt" is the promise that Hopewell shot us when he announced the series, and it looks like he's on his way to making good on it.

Monday, March 11, at Davey's Uptown Ramblers Club

Arrington de Dionyso is at RecordBar tonight (Monday)

Posted By on Mon, Feb 18, 2013 at 12:42 PM

arringtondedionyso01.jpg
Arrington de Dionyso's noisy free jazz - a stew of bass-clarinet blurts, throat singing, polyrhythmic drumming and feral world music - has earned him acclaim among the types of music fans who subscribe to defiantly nonmainstream magazines like the U.K.'s The Wire. So it stands to reason that during his stop here in town, he'll be performing alongside some of Kansas City's avant-garde elite: Snuff Jazz-centric musicians Mark Southerland, Ashley Miller and Shawn Hansen. Expo '70 opens.

Monday, February 18, at RecordBar.

Fat Tuesday Festivities: Dropout Boogie, Bloodbirds

Posted By on Tue, Feb 12, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Today is Fat Tuesday, a day for imbibing and carousing and sometimes hooliganism. If you're up for leaving your place of residence on a Tuesday night, we have a few ideas.

Dropout Boogie at the Brick

Carnival costumes are encouraged at this Mardi Gras celebration, and guests are also promised delicious New Orleans fare and drink specials. Work off all those heavy calories by getting down to some presumably Big Easy-centric soul and funk 45s from the DJ dudes in the Dropout Boogie.

UPDATE: Ex-Cult has canceled. Bloodbirds and Lazy still playing. Cover now only $5.

Bloodbirds, with Ex-Cult and Lazy at RecordBar

Over the past year and a half, local trio Bloodbirds has released a handful of EPs, the common denominator being a dark, psych-tinged post-punk sound. The group is led by Mike Tuley, who has brought the same unhinged quality to Bloodbirds that he did to his former group, Ad Astra Per Aspera. Bloodbirds' new LP, Psychic Surgery, is out online; the vinyl, which you can order at this show, will be available in April.

Lady Gaga is just like us...she eats ribs at 2 a.m.

All I can figure is that tracklisting must take a lot of energy. Lady Gaga is in Kansas City for tonight's show at the Sprint Center (here's The Pitch's review of her 2010 extraGaganza in the same venue), and she started the day off right with a rack of ribs. Now, if a barbecue place would just deliver to us regular working folk at 2 a.m., that would be something.

See Sum 41 at the Granada tonight

Are you under the impression that Sum 41 is washed up, forgotten, yesterday's news? You are as wrong as singer Deryck Whibley was when he thought his marriage to Avril Lavigne would last forever! You are as wrong as Whibley was when he thought, There's no way my ex-wife will take up with that blond singer with the permed mullet from Nickelback! The Canadian pop-punk bros are still killing it - they have 3.5 million Facebook fans, if that counts for anything - and this Lawrence date is part of the second leg of their 10th anniversary Does This Look Infected Tour. Take that, Kroeger!

Monday, January 28, at the Granada, 7 p.m. doors.

Three New Year's Eve events to ring in 2013

Posted By on Mon, Dec 31, 2012 at 9:00 AM

The New Riddim
  • The New Riddim

Murder By Death

A show by the aptly named group Murder By Death (murder ballads are its forte) isn't what jumps to mind for a New Year's Eve celebration. But the Bloomington, Indiana, quintet has cultivated a nice, bubbly fanbase in Lawrence. And local indie acts Cowboy Indian Bear and Y(our) Fri(end) ought to add a little life to the evening.

Monday, December 31, at the Granada, doors at 9 p.m., $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

The Golden Republic

Five years after splitting, the Golden Republic reunited for a couple of one-offs in 2011. The glammy pop-punk quartet does it again here with friends in Thee Water MoccaSins, who don't often play together, owing to geographic constraints.

Monday, December 31, at RecordBar, doors at 9 p.m., $12.

Nug Life New Year's Eve

You'll have to ignore the unbelievably terrible name, if you can, but this party has a lot of potential. I saw the reggae dudes in the New Riddim move some serious asses one random Friday night at Harling's earlier this year. And the 1990s-R&B-themed Booty Jamz is on the rise as one of Westport's best dance parties, even though it is totally biting the style of my on-hiatus DJ duo Pussy Monster. (Just kidding - Pussy Monster played only two shows, and nobody paid any attention.) Also on hand: DJ Clockwerk and Pocket Change.

Monday, December 31, at Riot Room, 8 p.m., $5.

Quiet Corral is at the Riot Room tonight with O Giant Man

Quiet Corral
  • Quiet Corral
The Pitch last chatted with Quiet Corral just a few weeks ago, as the band prepares to release its new album in the spring. Quietly (get it? we are hilarious), the band has been building a fanbase around the country, including an appearance on Austin City Limits. If you haven't yet seen them locally, tonight provides a good opportunity - they'll be sharing the stage at the Riot Room with another quality local act, O Giant Man.

See Quiet Corral's cover of Aloe Blacc's "I Need a Dollar" here.

Bored on Christmas? Go see the Beautiful Bodies

Posted By on Mon, Dec 24, 2012 at 9:30 AM

The Beautiful Bodies
  • The Beautiful Bodies

This Christmas-night performance is billed as "A Beautiful Fucking Xmas with the Beautiful Bodies." I don't care for the vulgar language. But if being cooped up with your family all day finds you in need of a cabin-fever cure, the Bodies' boisterous dance rock is probably the best option in town. With Is Paris Burning and DJ Thundercutz.

Tuesday, December 25, at RecordBar, 9 p.m., $7.

The Conquerors/the Devil/Snake Island/the Levitators play end-of-the-world show tonight at the Roost

The Conquerors

For anyone bummed that the world continued to turn today, there is an upside: the wealth of great local shows tonight (see here and here).

Another very promising option is the end-of-the-year show at the Roost in the West Bottoms (1100 Santa Fe), featuring the Conquerors, the Devil, Snake Island and the Levitators. For a mere $5, it promises to be psychedelic and rowdy - and perhaps a good way to usher in all of those remaining days.
