Newcomers to the City Market wonder why customers -- of all shapes, sizes, colors, and castes -- start lining up on Saturday mornings to get one of the few tables or counter seats at this unassuming little diner. It's the combination of the food (hearty and inexpensive) and the rapport between the good-natured cooks behind the counter and the quick-witted waitresses working the room, whipping out their order pads faster than Wyatt Earp ever pulled a revolver. Most of the staff are members of the Cascone family; they're friendly and gregarious, even when the place is packed. There's no better place to settle down with a cup of good coffee, a plate of eggs, buttered Italian toast, spicy sausage, and a side of marinara sauce.
