Kansas Citians don't get complimentary trash bags any more. But the best things in life are still free. On Saturdays, we can stop by the city's two leaf-and-brush drop-off spots and load a pickup with wood mulch. It's not the colored stuff you can get at Westlake Hardware, but we think this is better. The city's natural wood chunks are perfect for the wild look we prefer; it yields the stage to our cherished flowers and lush shrubs. Best of all, it keeps those pesky weeds at bay, so we don't have to spend our weekends on our hands and knees.
