Readers' Choice: Stretch
Only one thing at the Green Door Gallery's Smut show surprised us more than discovering what other people find sexy, and that was Renee Laferriere's portrait series. The smudgy black formations against hot-pink backgrounds seemed abstract for a split second, like a Rorschach test. Labeled simply as "portraits" with female names, these ink splotches took a moment to register. Laferriere asked her friends to put black paint on their you-know-whats and then sit on pink paper to create life-sized portraits of their vaginas. It became clear that, like other body parts, vaginas vary quite a bit and might just be distinctive and recognizable. Whereas most of the show's art worked within traditional, time-honored formulas for smut -- images of people masturbating, licking toes and/or wearing skimpy fetish attire -- Laferriere's work took an intelligent, unique approach to expressing sexuality, framing those things we all know a little differently, as fine art is supposed to do. In the process, she turned the idea of the portrait very nearly on its ass. This inspired commitment to both concept and craft, and the ability to create independently without relying on time-honored formulas, set Laferriere apart. Whether she's making tattooed-pigskin tutus or memorializing her friend's vaginas, Laferriere's spot-on efforts remind us of Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton's precise landings in the 1980s. Whenever we see her work and drink a little too much box wine, it takes all the restraint we have to keep from shouting, "And she nails it!"
