Among Kansas City's disc golf courses, Water Works is the best workout and by far the most scenic. (During the winter, high tees afford a clear view of downtown.) Its serenity, however, is what makes it difficult. Rolling hills spotted with 120-year-old trees make for tight fairways and a forest edge. A high hill might help launch the disc right into the chains, but curve it ever so slightly left and it'll land in the trenches. The course's difficulty may be the reason it's not overrun with disc golf enthusiasts. But among those who play regularly, it has inspired its own term: If you don't hit the pin just right, you'll get "waterworked," the disc catching a slope and rolling a couple of hundred feet away.
