Scott Cordes in Duck Hunter Shoots Angel
Mitch Albom's Duck Hunter Shoots Angel isn't dumb the way Airplane! is dumb. It's dumb the way the dumbest white guy you know is dumb, especially when said dumb guy is liquored up, listening to Larry the Cable Guy, and bitching about how black folks are allowed to say nigger but he isn't. Still, if the acting's sharp, even the dullest lines can cut, as Scott Cordes (father of Sami; see above) demonstrated in May at the American Heartland Theatre throughout what is, as of this writing, the dumbest play so far this millennium. As the duck hunter of the title, Cordes was smarter about playing dumb than anyone else we've seen this year, committing himself so deeply to the stupid that he had us roaring even when called upon to do that hacky squeal-like-a-pig bit from Deliverance. A couple of months later, in Lanford Wilson's Talley plays, he had dialogue worth his chops, but we kind of liked him best here, mining glory out of shit.
