Best Artist

James Woodfill
James Woodfill's installations -- subtle, ruminative and luminous -- beautifully decorate the Kansas City landscape. Woodfill's art is and is of Kansas City. That includes Deuce at the Kansas City International Airport; Sky Line, the wide band of woozy blue light atop the Plaza at the Sulgrave Condominium Building; the Freight House Signal Project, which blinks atop scattered poles in a Crossroads parking lot; and Pulse, the buzzing stairwell lights in a garage across the street from City Hall. His frequent collaborations with El Dorado Architects Inc. are pretty, urban accents that infiltrate the noise pollution of busy streets with a soothing, visual hum. Woodfill graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute and also taught there, proving that a local boy can make good while making great art.
