Best Breakfast
The Classic Cookie
On Saturdays and Sundays, there's invariably a crowd waiting and hoping to snag a table -- any table -- in the 30-seat dining room where owner Leslie Stockard and her kitchen crew serve terrific breakfasts. Some loyal customers eat here several times a week. The regulars include artist Jim Sajovic, who insists that Stockard's fried potatoes are the best in the city. Of course they are: The secret's the bacon grease! But the crunchy, addictive potatoes steal no thunder from the fluffy buttermilk pancakes, comforting hot waffles, excellent omelets and all kinds of decadent muffins (including blueberry, raspberry and the signature sour-cream-coffeecake muffin). Really hungry patrons order a basket of mini muffins or a gooey sugar-glazed cinnamon roll to enjoy as an appetizer before breakfast arrives. A sugary pastry and a cup of good coffee can always jolt a sleep-dazed diner back into consciousness before a real breakfast of, say, an herbed-potato-and-sausage casserole or a fat breakfast burrito packed with scrambled eggs, bacon, green onions and cheese.
