Best High School Athlete
Bishop Miege Shooting Guard Travis Releford
When Travis Releford was 15, he had the attention of the elite coaches of college basketball -- North Carolina's Roy Williams, Kansas' Bill Self and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. They all want the 6-foot-4-inch shooting guard in their 2008 recruiting class. And what a catch he'll be. The major scouting services rank him as a top-10 prospect, though they disagree on whether Releford is a four- or five-star player. Whatever the ranking, he's definitely a gamer. As a freshman, Releford earned Interscholastic League Player of the Year honors, averaging 22.7 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game. In January, the heavily hyped Releford made headlines for hopping the state line, transferring from Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri, to Bishop Miege in Fairway. He returned to the hardwood this summer (after dislocating his ankle), suiting up for KC Pump N Run, a team of the best prospects in Kansas and Missouri. Releford's team advanced to the second round of the Adidas Super 64 Tournament. His summer session should have him prepped for another year of lighting up opposing teams. Needless to say, Releford won't have to worry about paying off college loans.
