Gordon Gerski, Power Plant Restaurant & Brewery
On the second Saturday of every month, Power Plant Restaurant & Brewery brewmaster Gordon Gerski does the beermaker's equivalent of keeping it real. He runs Brew U, a beermaking class that demonstrates how to make a handcrafted pint from start to finish. See, before becoming the head beer guy at Power Plant, Gerski was a lowly home brewer. When he got on at the Brewery seven years ago, he was doing grunt work like hauling kegs in his pickup. Now, for $40, he offers beer geeks lunch and a daylong apprenticeship brewing house ales. "We go over the very aspect of the brewing process, the basics on hops, the different varieties of hops and the different types of malts," Gerski says. At the end of the day, students receive diplomas. Says Gerski: "And then we drink a lot of beer."
