Best Comic-Book Shop
Clint's Comics
When we heard about the murder of Captain America, we had to read about the death of Marvel's great patriot. We went comic-shop hopping. By the time we hit the pair of comic-book shops that face each other in Westport, it was 10 minutes to 6. At Clint's Comics, owner Jim Cavanaugh told us that his store was open for another hour, so if we wanted to go across the street to his competitor, which was closing in 10 minutes, no big deal. We stayed at Clint's. It's service like this that has made the 40-year-old comic-book shop a Kansas City institution. Cavanaugh pointed us straight to Captain America No. 25, telling us that Clint's had only one copy left and the murder book would cost us $40 (totally out of our price range). He then told us that we could find copies on eBay for about $6. Then he added, "Do you just want to read it?" Yeah, we told him. He said to come back later in the week, that the book would be reissued as a "director's cut" for $4.99. Later in the week, we returned and snagged the book — and a regular comic-book shop.
