No one really thinks First Friday is all about the art. With so many people crowding the galleries with their bodies and chatter, it's hard to even see the art, much less contemplate its meaning. We're under no illusions: First Friday is for partying. And parties usually include snacks. The treats were almost too good to eat at the KCAI Crossroads Gallery back in February. In fact, during the opening reception for the multiple-artist exhibition Press Me Delicious, it was hard to distinguish the food from the art. A mixed-media installation conjured memories of Candyland games and tales of sinister gingerbread houses through colonies of color sweet enough to make our teeth hurt. The exhibition came with a side of cupcakes, their heads slathered in pastel goo, each a little baked sculpture in its own right. No two looked the same. The blue, pink and yellow hues of the frosting matched the paint of the installation but, thankfully, tasted better — creamy, smooth and not too sweet.
