No one whips up made-for-TV drama like KCTV Channel 5's chief meteorologist, Katie Horner. During a thunderstorm, she once advised viewers to seek shelter and strap on bike helmets. This year, she erroneously speculated that a beach ball floating in a Brush Creek flood might be a body. Critics complain that her coverage scares old folks and disrupts regular programs. Things got personal this year with the appearance of FireKatie.com, a Web site that questioned her credentials, chronicled her rants and circulated a petition to remove her. Horner responded in the Star, saying in a May 7 story that she's "totally passionate about weather safety." And she lashed out at one of her competitors, telling Star TV writer Aaron Barnhart, "I'm not going to name any names, but I think about Lawrence, Kansas ... and I think about a meteorologist who claims credibility and accuracy going on the air and saying, ÔLawrence, you're not going to get hit by this tornado' as they were being hit by that tornado." (Barnhart made it clear that she was talking about KSHB Channel 41's Gary Lezak.) For the entertainment value alone, we're keeping an eye on Horner's personal Doppler.
