A gaggle of old ladies bitching at a store clerk is generally a reason to shop elsewhere. At Avenue Thrift, the cranky blue-hairs are an indication of the loyal clientele. The KCK secondhand shop has an '80s-inspired neon sign that boasts "Kansas City's Best Since 1966." Its varied stock of clothing and household items backs up that claim. Grannies get cranky when the management moves the doilies rack to make room for some new cache of clothing, but other metro residents are enticed by the constantly replenished stash of goodies that includes vintage dresses, snakeskin cowboy hats, and oddball T-shirts with slogans such as "This Girl likes Guys Who Drive Chevys." And you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that costs more than $5 at this joint. There's just one hitch: no browse now, buy later. At Avenue, the object of your desire may be out the door by closing time.
