Longview Lake Recreation Center500 Southwest Longview Road, Lee's Summit 816-761-3233 It's a bit of a catch-22 for the novice cyclist. Those slick athletes in aerodynamic helmets and colorful spandex can be inspiring — and more than a little intimidating. Group rides are good motivation, but they're tempered with the potential for public displays of rookie mistakes and exertion-induced asthma attacks. Saturday morning at Longview Lake is the best of both worlds. The Bicycle Shack hosts Cycling 101 at 7:45 a.m. for folks who need a pro to give their bikes a once-over, could use a primer on group-riding etiquette and need to take the 11-mile lake loop at an easy pace. An hour later, a ride for the more-seasoned spandex crowd heads out of the Longview Recreation Center for a longer, faster loop. But given the easygoing vibe that surrounds this weekend gathering, many of the experienced cyclists use the rookie ride to warm up. That makes those fancy suits seem way more attainable and gives the newbies some buddies to ride with as soon as they're ready.
