Best CelebritySen. Claire McCaskill
David who? Some guy from Blue Springs might have won American Idol, but that doesn't make him the city's best celebrity. That honor goes to Sen. Claire McCaskill, who spent much of the year hyping Sen. Barack Obama on political talk shows, where her candid wisdom was a revelation to cynical hosts. In July, McCaskill went mano-a-mano with former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina (standing in for Sen. John McCain) on Meet the Press. McCaskill was a good sport on The Colbert Report in May. And on a February episode of Real Time With Bill Maher, she charmed the audience, describing how her daughter had convinced her to support Obama: "[She] was in my face saying, 'How can you look yourself in the mirror? You're a slug, you're playing it politically safe.... I'll never speak to you again if you don't stand up and have some courage." Incredibly, she earned laughs on the wonky subject of earmarks: "Most of the people who say they're against earmarks still have their hands out. It's a little like being half-pregnant. You either should not do it, or you should go whole-hog. Most people are going whole-hog, and I'd like to not see us doing the whole-hog thing." To which Maher could only say, "I find your candor refreshing, senator. I really, really like it." The audience applauded wildly. That's the kind of reality show we like.
