Most local musicians would be overjoyed to get picked up by a major indie or to open for Built to Spill at The Granada, but a Grammy? Get out. Not so the Kansas City Chorale, which, in collaboration with the Phoenix Bach Choir and under the direction of award-winning UMKC conservatory grad Charles Bruffy, got four Grammy nominations this year for its album Grechaninov: Passion Week, including Best Classical Album and Best Choral Performance. The group ended up taking home the trophy for Best Engineered Album, Classical, which is no small gas, given the difficulty level of the obscure, early 20th-century Russian music featured on the album. So in short, there's never been a better time to support the local classical scene or to get down to church — any church where the KC Chorale is singing, of course.
