Best Film Festival
The military, motherhood and Muslims all took to the screen during this summer's seven-night run of the Gay & Lesbian Film + Video Festival. The documentary Ask Not exposed the flaws in the dreadful "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" half measure. The French feature The New World depicted a lesbian couple contemplating parenthood. Jihad for Love followed a group of Iranian men pursuing asylum in the West. The festival put a spotlight on homegrown work as well, with a showing of Lisa Marie Evans' When Did You Know, which asked Kansas City men and women to describe the moment they discovered their attraction to the same sex. Ultimately, festival audiences gave Best in Show honors to Chris & Don: A Love Story, a critically acclaimed doc about the 33-year relationship between British writer Christopher Isherwood and American artist Don Bachardy.
