(Tie) There Stands the Glass and Plastic Sax

Moving from occasional check-in to everyday must-read is every serious blogger's ambition. No one (who doesn't write for this paper, of course) has done that more effectively and unexpectedly than Bill Brownlee. Having established his blog creds with Happy in Bag (his chronicle of suburban life), Brownlee turned to pop music locally and worldwide with There Stands the Glass. It was originally an MP3 blog featuring a download of some obscure classic or new track from Brownlee's collection, a short essay and a photo of a drink (the eponymous glass) beside the CD cover. Keeping its M.O., the blog has grown into an excellent source of local news and commentary on everything from old-school soul and blues to gangsta rap. Meanwhile, over on Plastic Sax, Brownlee keeps torches burning for Kansas City jazz musicians old and young and, perhaps more important, keeps a fire under the asses of local institutions and powers that would be.
