Best TV PersonalityShaun Broyls, KCTV Channel 5
On his bio page at the KCTV Channel 5 Web site, Shaun Broyls says his favorite thing about Kansas City is that "it's not St. Louis." If that isn't a way to a Kansas Citian's heart, we don't know what is. Making that bold statement is probably deserving of a Best Of all by itself. But Broyls, who joined the station in January as a weekend anchor and a general assignment reporter, also happens to be a solid journalist who brings the right amount of low-key sincerity to the shriekiness of TV news. He's never overly dramatic and doesn't feign interest in a vapid story. When he's co-anchoring on weekends, the silly banter is usually kept to a minimum. When he's anchoring alone, the newscast doesn't feel bogged down with extraneous comments. He also seems cool and funny — he once offered to pay anyone $4 to mow his lawn during a heat wave. That kind of remark would sound lame from other anchors, but it was funny coming from him. So we weren't surprised to learn that he once performed stand-up comedy and acted in commercials. For now, though, we hope he'll stick with TV news in KC. After all, it's not St. Louis.
