Jay WaLe's Bakery-Bistro
Pastry chef Ellen Hume's little storefront restaurant and sweetshop is the closest thing to a Left Bank patisserie in Kansas City, Kansas — or just about anywhere else in the metro. Brazilian-born Hume named her bakery Jay WaLe after daughter Jacy, son Wagner and grandson Leonardo, but the chef herself is the driving force behind the business, which recently started serving weekday breakfasts after the diner next door closed. Hume fills her refrigerated glass cases with stunning cakes and desserts — a recent selection featured tiramisu, fresh Bing cherry cheesecake, lemon-raspberry cake, shortbread cookies, Mexican wedding cake cookies, and Russian tea cakes. The dining room is tiny, but it's one of the most delightful spots in town for a quiet lunch or a cup of tea and homemade cream puffs.
